Sassafras Oil is a steam-distilled essential oil derived from the roots and stumps of sassafras trees. Characterized by its pale yellow to reddish-yellow appearance and intense, sweet-spicy aroma with earthy undertones, it contains **80–90% Safrole** as the primary bioactive compound. Historically used in flavorings and fragrances, it is now strictly regulated due to safrole’s toxicity and carcinogenic potential.
APPLICATIONS:
Note: Banned in food/cosmetics (FDA/EFSA) due to toxicity. Current uses are restricted to non-consumable industrial sectors:
1. Industrial Chemistry:
- Precursor for Synthesis: Primary source of safrole for manufacturing piperonal (heliotropin), pesticides (e.g., piperonyl butoxide), and MDMA precursors.
- Solvent: Degreasing agent in metal/electronics cleaning.
2. Fragrance (Limited):
- Soap/Detergent Perfumery: Fixative for spicy-woody notes (≤0.01% final concentration, IFRA-exempt only).
3. Traditional Medicine:
- External Use Only: Topical antiseptic in folk remedies (diluted to <1%).
